December 17th: Internet goes out in the evening. We've had temporary outages before, so we aren't too worried.
See how happy he looks? This is because my parents had internet on Christmas day, and they were willing to share the bounty.
December 26th: Still no internet. I'm pissed, since we are paying FAR too much right now for our service, since our promotion expired in September. The previous Friday, I had tried calling tech support, and spent 35 minutes on the line without ever having talked to a soul. It only seemed rational to go ahead and switch providers. We placed our order with the promise of internet starting on January 2, 2013.
January 2, 2013: We get our new modem for the new provider, and we do everything exactly as prescribed. No dice. *%^(_)$#@^%$^&%$^$%. Yeah, those words. So I called tech support for the new provider. They were much, much, much more responsive. Unfortunately, they couldn't do didly-squat for us, and set up a service call for January 3, 2013. In the process of trying to make it all happen, Ammon disconnected the router and modem entirely from the previous provider, even though it wasn't needed. I told him that we should just try it and see if we could make it work, in the event that this new provider doesn't work out.
This is me laying down the law with this internet business. |
Well, what do you know? The dang thing worked.
So, we kind of have internet for a bit. But now we're confused, because we may not end up having a choice about what internet service we have, and that makes me kinda mad. I want good rates. I want good service. I want tech support that answers the phone. But the truth is, the new provider may not be able to make that happen without a lot of high costs.
Being a grown up really stinks, sometimes.
Yargh. I hope your internet gets better. We have the same problem here with costs getting crazy after the promotion. The only thing that keeps them in check is my seemingly annual "find a new apartment" schedule that enables me to be a new customer once a year. So there's always the option to totally uproot your life for a better internet deal ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Cleveland we had internet problems all the time! I feel your pain!
ReplyDeletewe just pay rent across the board because we live on someone's basement so we don't have to deal with utility companies at all. it's been so nice. sorry you're having a hard time with the internet. I'd almost rather not have internet than have to deal with their tech support.
ReplyDeleteUgh that is so obnoxious. Being an adult is ridiculous sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWhere I live there is only one provider for cable & Internet. Unless you want a satellite dish, but I live on 3 acres of woods so that won't work. I hate not having options.
ReplyDeleteI know that it is probably very frustrating as it is happening but this does make for a rather funny story :) I pray everything works out if only for Ammon's sake
ReplyDeleteInternet woes - nothing makes me more frustrated! I had huge internet woes at my old apartment in the US (ok, so it was 2007...what of it!) that still make me cringe. I hope something works out - or at least that you get to talk on the phone with a human being.
ReplyDeletesheesh this sounds so annoying! I hope your internet woes are soon over for good.
ReplyDeleteMan I hate technology.. Totally why I"m still with the more expensive service instead of trying to find it cheaper.
ReplyDeleteYeah, being a grown up really sucks.
ReplyDeleteUGHH been there. In North Carolina there was only one internet provider in our area, and they were AWFUL. My internet went out constantly and they were so expensive, and tech support wouldn't do a thing. I threw a lot of things those 3 years.
ReplyDeleteI hate, hate,HATE having problems with internet - so annoying!x
